Checkpoint: Big Sur

You've made it to Big Sur!

Big Sur is a mountainous section of land on the central coast of California, and is often praised for its dramatic scenery. And this scenery will remain for years to come, as the Big Sur Local Coastal Plan is one of the most restrictive documents local-use programs in the state, and potentially the country. This document prevents excessive development, severely restricting densitey and protecting viewsheds from highways and other vantage points. 60% of this coastal land is owned by the government or private agencies which do not allow any development.

This makes the land here an immensely popular tourist attraction, as its natural features and nearly pristine scenery are nearly unparalleled. It has even been described as one of the top 35 tourist locations in the entire world. Its natural beauty has at times been compared to even the Grand Canyon.

As far as pop culture, Big Sur has been the location of several moveis. The first of them being Suspicion in 1941, with other movies including 1965's The Sandpiper, and 1974's Zandy's Bride. In total, as of 2017, 19 movies have been filmed in this region. In addition to that, the song "California Saga: California" off of The Beach Boys' album Holland depicts Big Sur, and Mac OS 11.0 is nicknamed "Big Sur" after the region (all information courtesy of Wikipedia.com, image courtesy of Calilover / Public domain).
