Checkpoint: Mammoth Lakes

You've made it to Mammoth Lakes, the only incorporated community in Mono County, California!

The first people to inhabit Mammoth Lakes were in fact the the Mono People, which is a potential reason for the name of the county.

In terms of European history, this started in 1877, when four prospectors staked a claim on mineral hill. A year later, the Mammoth Mining Company began to mine Mineral Hill, causing a gold rush. By the end of this year, 1500 people settled in the mining camp. By 1880, however, the company had shut down, and by 1888, the population had declined to less than 10 people. By 1900, the town of Mammoth was informally established near Mammoth Creek.

Regarding notable people from Mammoth Lakes, it has been home to a wealth of athletes, including marathon runners Deena Kastor, Meb Keflezighi, and Ryan Hall, as well as 50k US record holder Josh Cox, and Winter X Games and 2018 Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim (all information courtesy of Wikipedia.com, image courtesy of Nandaro / CC BY-SA).
