Checkpoint: Napa Valley
You've now made it to Napa Valley, a part of California's Wine Country!
Napa Valley is considered one of the most premier wine regions in the United States, and even the world, and while there are records of wine production taking
place here from back in the nineteenth century, luxury wine production can only be traced back to the 1960's.
Napa has the perfect combination of a Mediterranean climate, and proper geography and geology for the cultivation of wine grapes. Viticulture has suffered some setbacks
in the area, most notably an outbreak of phylloxera, a vine disease, as well as Prohibition and the Great Depression. However, it has perservered, and is now seen as
capable of producing wine on par with the very best of even Old World wines, in part a result of the results of the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976.
Nowadays, Napa Valley is a quintessential destination for enotourism. Nearly 4.5 million people visit the Napa Valley each and every year. In fact, in 2010, TripAdvisor's
Travelers' Choice Awards named it "The World's Best Wine and Food Destination" (all information courtesy of Wikipedia.com,
