Checkpoint: Point Reyes

You've now made it to Point Reyes! Point Reyes actually consists of four towns, Bolinas, Olema, Inverness, and Point Reyes Station.

This area has been the source of some controversy in the 20th century. This might not come as a surprise, as places of natural beauty such as this one are often fought over by conservationsists and developers. This was mostly the same. Developers and loggers were submitting requests when in 1956, the National Parks Service recommended acquisition of the peninsula. By 1958, a report was published recommending the immediate acquisition of 35,000 acres of land by the NPS. This sparked huge amounts of controversy, with environmentalists applauding the proposal, and ranchers opposing it. However, a compromise was reached, which would permit the acquisition but allow rachers to continue to lease the land while coexisting with tourists and park activities.

Today, Point Reyes is a common destination for the San Francisco Bay Area, with its main attractions including hiking, kayaking, and birdwatching (all information courtesy of Wikipedia.com, image courtesy of King of Hearts / CC BY-SA).
