Checkpoint: Bloomfield
Welcome to Bloomfield, Iowa! Bloomfield is a city in Davis County, and is in fact the county
seat. It is located in the southeastern part of Iowa, near the Missouri border.
Bloomfield is perhaps most notable for having the Davis County Courthouse located in it, which is pictured to the right (image courtesy of Eab969 at English Wikipedia / Public domain
). It is located in the town square, and was designed by Thomas J. Tolan & Son Architects, from Fort Wayne Indiana. The bell inside the courthouse was made by
the Meneely & Kimberly Bell Company, in Troy, New York. The clock itself was made by the Seth Thomas Company, and is still in the courthouse today.
In 1879, the building was finally completed. That same year, a chain surrounding the courthouse was added, and two years later, an iron fence made by the Cleveland
Wrought Iron Fence Company.
In 1924, an attempt to climb the northwest corner of the courthouse was made by Henry Roland, otherwise known as "Dare-Devil." However, he fell from about 25
feet up, and broke his hip. He was hospitalized, but made a full recovery, and returned home. Eight years later, he returned to remove the mark it left on his reputation,
and this time was able to climb to the very top in just eleven minutes.
In 1974, the courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and the historic district which surrounds it was added in November of 1976.
Aside from the courthouse, there have been some notable people from Bloomfield. Among them are former Governers of Iowa Beryl Carroll and George Clark, former Editor-in-Chief of
The Los Angeles Times L.D. Hotchkiss, MLB pitcher for the Colorado Rockies and Detroit Tigers Kevin Ritz, as well as a multitude of United States House Representatives and
Senators, one of which (James Weaver), ran for president twice under two different third parties, in 1880 as a member of the Greenback Party, and in 1892 as a member of the
Populist Party (all information courtesy of Wikipedia.com).
