Checkpoint: Stitzel-Weller Distillery

Welcome to the Stitzel-Weller Distillery! This distillery is most well-known for being the producer of Bulleit Bourbon, though they also make a number of other whiskeys under the Bulleit label.

The name Bulleit is from the original distiller, Thomas E. Bulleit, who in 1987 decided to quit his job at a successful law practice and risk everything to make whiskey, and experience life on the frontier.

While like all bourbons Bulleit Bourbon's mash is made mostly of corn, Bulleit specifically is known for having quite high rye content in its mash. This gives it a more spicy flavor to it, as opposed to some of the sweeter bourbons, which use more corn, and less rye.

It is also aged in chared oak barrles, like all other bourbons, and uses Kentucky limestone filtered water as a base, which, while not required for a whiskey to qualify for bourbon status, seems to be a very common choice for bourbons, especially ones made in the area (all information courtesy of bulleit.com, image courtesy of Timothyjosephwood / CC BY-SA).
